Costs of alcohol sales outweigh its gains

Ontario province is making plans to increase alcohol availability, obviously for economic reasons. However, more robust evidence exists that the overall cost of alcohol sales outweighs its financial gains.

Alcohol share of overall substance use costs in Canada, 2020

Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms Scientific Working Group (2023) estimated that the costs attributable to alcohol in 2020 amounted to 19.7 billion Canadian dollars. It was 40% of total costs attributable to all types of substance use. Here is the link.
